i’ve been feeling really restless all night, unable to finish anything that i start, skittish, distracted, what have you. and i really couldn’t figure it out, until about two seconds ago. and it’s so simple, really.
it’s this fandom war. or these, i should say — because to be honest, what i have to say does not merely apply to the supernatural fandom.
but here’s the thing:
Dean Winchester is the boy who gave everything and still felt it wasn’t enough. He does everything for the people he loves and unless someone STOPS him, he’ll keep giving until there’s nothing left of him. Dean will put them up on a pedestal, he’ll become furious when they (Sam, Castiel) do something that takes them down a darker road because to him he thinks that should have been me, not you. You shouldn’t have to do that. When they fail to meet his expectations, he feels betrayed. Like they aren’t infallible, and they’re no better than he is. He can’t accept that, because to him, he is the lowest of the low, and if they fall off and hit his depths, then what is there for him to put his faith in? What reason is there for him to believe that there’s anyone better, that he hasn’t put everything into the people he cares about for no reason?
Dean Winchester is smarter than most give him credit for, but he hides it because to him, he’s not smart enough. He’s put down constantly and treated like an idiot, and that just creates more rationality for him to say, “Well, I guess I really am that stupid.” And so he falls victim to the self-fulfilling prophecy, and is “woefully inadequate” (or so he assumes) because he believes himself to be.
Dean Winchester never says what he means, because he’s been taught from early on to “keep your mouth shut and do what you’re told,” and he was raised in a family bent on vengeance. He’s had to lie to everyone about everything he is, and taught that feeling anything isn’t “manly” and therefore he shouldn’t do it. And Sam at least had a chance to get away from it, since Dean mostly raised him, but Dean himself was not so lucky. And so even now, when the words are on the tip of his tongue, he’s conditioned himself to use sarcasm, and hurtful words that are nothing like what he feels. Dean is so emotional but he cannot express it properly—it comes out mangled and wrong and he wonders what the point of SAYING it is, even.
Dean Winchester hates himself. He thinks he deserved to go to Hell. He sees himself as an awful, lowly person who doesn’t deserve good things, and when he gets them they are treated with suspicion and distrust. Dean, who cannot understand why an angel raised him from Hell, cannot see why anyone would want to be around him, or love him, unless they were obligated to do so. Dean, who lets so few people in but has a soft spot in his heart for children in peril, because he sees himself reflected in them. Dean, who left his brother to Hell and spent a year in a miserable fairy tale life because that brother wanted him to be happy and normal. Dean, who looked back at Castiel in the holy fire, who hid his true feelings about everything because of his black and white morality. Dean, who tortured in Hell and thought he deserved to back there because he broke. Because he saw himself as weak-willed.
This is not a man who can be defined by simple words. He is complex, and he is broken, and he has seen and done things that no one should ever have to. And yet he still carries on. Because he must. Because he wants to shoulder all the burdens that come upon his loved ones, and he would die for them as many times as it takes until they are safe. He shows himself in his gestures, in his physicality, because it’s the only way he can express the truth without speaking. He wants comfort, and love, and to know that he isn’t a bad person, deep down, because he can’t find it in himself not to hate everything he is. Self-loathing has eaten away at him, replaced by sarcasm and bitterness, and he hides it well most of the time, but it’s still there.
an old meta post of mine from my old blog—figured that now was a good time to bring it back from the archives…
It Sam’s thing isn’t it? You taking on his cage match scars, I’m guessing that’s what broke your bank, right?
Well, it took everything to get me here
- Furthermore, the owner of this blog will ignore the #silentmajority campaign, because it is ridiculous to claim you speak for more than half of the fandom. Proof? No, proof, so change your title, please.
- Yes, this blog ships Dean and Castiel with the force of a thousand burning suns. Have a problem with that? I don’t care.
- No, this blog doesn’t hate Sam. In fact, the owner of this blog loves Sam and acknowledges that Supernatural is the story of two brothers. The owner enjoys their bond immensely. That doesn’t mean the monster-of-week format works anymore. Because it doesn’t. Proof, season 7.
- Supernatural is not season 1/2 anymore. Get over it. A show needs to progress and not regress.
- The owner of this blog appreciates and loves almost all side-characters, respects their character development and doesn’t want them to be treated like tools for the plot.
- The owner of this blog thinks Castiel is just as important as Sam and Dean. In fact, the owner supports Team Free Will.
- The owner of this blog wants a Dean-centric season where he gets the chance to be involved with the myth arc regardless of how much his brother or other characters are involved. Dean needs a chance to heal. He needs a chance to be independent. He needs a chance to shine.
- No, the owner of this blog does NOT believe Dean’s entire existence revolves around taking care of his brother. And Sam doesn’t believe it either, as seen below.
